spaceTIPS TO GET YOU STARTED - STEP ONE

When writing and designing web sites, you should be able to balance between user and search engine friendliness. It is important to develop a site which caters to the users needs for ease of use and proper site navigation. In addition you also need to consider the following aspects to meet the specifications of the search engine:

Web site URLs are embedded in JavaScript
This is the most common reason why web sites are not indexed by the search engines. If web site’s URLs are embedded in JavaScript, most of the search engines will not recognize and index these pages. If you're serious about getting your web sites indexed by the search engines as well as getting a good position on all major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, MSN and many others, please consider changing the web site style. You can do this either by putting links in a simple html format or by making alternative links at
the bottom of your page just for the search engines.

• There is insufficient content on web pages
Try to picture a search engine as a library and your web site as a book. The library only includes good quality books in its collection. The content of your web site is therefore one of the most important elements for search engines to determinate if your web site will be listed and ranked well. If your web site contains only images, Flash, Java script etc, it will be ignored by the search engines. This is simply because they can’t read these graphics. Please remember to provide valuable information, not just “good looking” image. Whenever possible, use HTML text on your web pages that will make your site more relevant.

Your Pages Are not Cross-Linked
Be aware that not all search engine spiders visit your web site from your main index page (index.html). If you have not linked each of your pages with all your other pages, you stand the risk of having engines indexing only one or two of your pages. To avoid this happening, just add text links at the bottom of your pages to all your other pages.

Your web site is in Frame style
Most major search engines do not support Frame style of the web sites. If you wish your web sites to be indexed by the search engines and get good results, please consider
changing your web sites to a non-frame style. The other way out is to publish your site as it should be if "frames" are incorporated. Construct the web site so the visitor has a choice between "using Frames" and "not using Frames". This way the pages will have to contain normal hyperlinks and the search engine robots will be happy.

Use the correct html Tags
Some search engines such as AltaVista and Google completely ignore web sites that have invalid html tag sequences. Also, make sure you use the close tags correctly.
For example: <font> requires </font>. Your browser may
display it correctly, but if you want the page to be indexed, check your codes and put them in order.

Do not use any Virtual Domain Redirection Service
If you are using an Internet Redirection Service to make it easy for people to remember your web site address, please do not use the Redirection web site address when submitting a web site to search engines. Instead, use your real web site URL to submit to search engines.

Using normal .html (or .htm) file format
If the contents of your web pages are generated in real time by using a script such as .cgi, .asp etc. rather than a normal .html (or .htm) file, you are taking the risk that your web sites may be ignored by the search engines. This is because search engines want to index the web pages, where they can identify what the information is about.

Meta Refresh and Meta Robots Tags
Check your codes for the following tags between the <head> and </head>.

<meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; URL=http://www.otherdomain.com/directory/filename.html">

This tag redirects your page to another web site. If you have this tag in your code, the robots will usually ignore your web site completely.

<meta name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

This tag specifically directs robots to ignore that web page. If you have it in your code, remove it immediately. You can use it on pages you do not want search engines to index.

Are You Using Free Web site Hosting?
Many free web site hosts use various methods of enforcing their advertising banners on your web site. This sometimes causes wrong and/or incomplete indexing of your web site. If you have repeatedly had trouble with getting your free web site indexed, switch to a pay web hosting provider.
